Historical Center
The Old town of Kalamata is located to the north of the modern city under the area of Castle. Today it is bounded by the metropolitan church of Ypapanti, the Sparti street and the Square of March 23 and has gathered, among other things, several meeting points for youngers especially during the winter months.
By the beginning of the last century, the city was concentrated around the ancient acropolis and gradually began to expand until it got united with the port. The Old town of Kalamata is considered the best place, where one can start the tour. Wandering through the narrow streets and you will have the feeling of being in another time and you will have the opportunity to discover old buildings that still stand there, dozens of houses, stone churches, museums and shops with local products.
In the Old town of Kalamata there are the Byzantine church of Agioi Apostoloi, the imposing church of Ypapanti on the Square of Ypapanti, the Alexandrakeio Nursing Home, the Municipal School of Music, the Historical and Folklore Museum of Kalamata and the Archaeological Museum of Messenia.
You can admire the magnificent view over the Old City of Kalamata and the beach from the location of the Castle, that you can visit and tour perimetrically.
