The Municipality of Kalamata has an area of ​​253.2 km² and a population of 62.409 (2011 inventory). It was a Municipality of the Prefecture of Messinia that operated with the Kapodistrias program in the period 1999-2010. It was established by the merger of the former Municipality of Kalamata and its neighboring older communities, which were then the municipal districts of the Municipality. In 2010, it was abolished and joined since 01.01.2011 in the new enlarged Kallikratis Municipality of Kalamata being located on the northern coast of the Messinian Gulf. It consists of 14 local communities, based around the city of Kalamata.

The morphological characteristics of Kalamata are a composition of coastal, lowland, semi-mountainous and mountainous areas, which have as their special feature the view in a large part of the mountainous area of ​​Taygetos.

From the total area, 4,4% is occupied by the lowland municipal districts, 18.3% of the total area is occupied by the local communities characterized as semi-mountainous, like the communities of Kalamata and Little Mantineia. While the remaining 77.3% is occupied by the mountainous communities, such as Alagonia, Artemisia, Verga, Elaiochori, Karveli, Lada, Nedousa and Piges. A predominant feature in the area of ​​the Municipality is that a rate of up to 70% of the total area is occupied by pastures and wooded land.

The Municipal Community of Kalamata is the seat of the Municipality of Kallikratis and accounts for 87.5% of the total population.
