 Municipality of Messini is a Municipality of the Peloponnisos Region that was established with the Kallikratis Program from the merging of the pre-existing municipalities of Aipeia, Androussa, Aristomenis, Voufrados, Ithomis, Messina, and Petalidi. The seat of the Municipality was designated to Messini.

Municipality of Messini is located on the right side of the river Pamisos and is ten kilometers away from the capital of the prefecture, Kalamata. The area of ​​the new Municipality of Messini is 563.7 sq. kilometers and the population 28.754 inhabitants, according to the 2011 inventory.

The city of Messini and seat of the New Messini Municipality, took its name in 1867 to honor the city, identified with the ancient Messini. Today’s Messini was named in the medieval years from the “Island” word, meaning the waters and marshes that wandered around the settlement west of Pamisos.
